You might need to stay flexible, but there are campgrounds that are first-come, first served. Best thing is to try them earlier in the day rather than later. Focus on what your goals are for the trip and then pick a campground (and an alternate just in case) that is central to those goals. Lodging might be harder but since summer is winding down, openings are more frequent.
