I've been to this NP eight times in the last nine years, and I'll probably go back a couple more times -- I love going there. That being said, I can't emphasize enough that Shenandoah pales in comparison to Yellowstone. It's smaller and less isolated. Its scenery, wildlife, and waterfalls are not as impressive. It has no thermal features, no moose or elk, no lakes, no major rivers, and no grizzlies.

However, the hiking can be enjoyable if you ask the Rangers what trail would match your abilities. You can hike zero meters (just pull off at the overlooks along the road), 100 meters, or 150 kilometers -- and every length and skill level in between. Skyland is a GREAT place to stay, as there is always something to do, either there or at Big Meadows -- just check the schedule.
